First Aid

M&O Pacific are specialists in First Aid and Emergency Medical Training and is one of the largest providers of this training in New Zealand. Our courses have been refined and developed for over ten years by paramedics from Emergency Care Consultants (NZ) Ltd (now a subsidiary of M&O Pacific), and are conducted by qualified and experienced trainers.

M&O Pacific First Aid and Emergency Medical courses earn NZQA credits and are highly interactive, with extensive use of practical training scenarios and hands on patient treatment. Our courses teach practical life saving skills that help people to respond to emergencies in the home and workplace.

Basic First Aid Courses

Basic Life Support – 1/2 day course

Course participants are guided through how to respond to an emergency by assessing the scene, before managing and treating an unconscious patient. The course includes training and practice in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and choking procedures for adults, children and infants, as well as protecting yourself from bio hazards such as AIDS, Hep B and Tuberculosis. Recommended for all persons over 12 years of age.


Practical First Aid – 1 day course

This course includes all elements of the Basic Life Support course, and builds on these with the skills required to deal with common medical and accident emergencies. Trainees will learn how to recognise, treat and manage conditions such as heart attack, bleeding, diabetes, fractures, dislocations, poisoning and burns.


Comprehensive First Aid – 2 day course

This course builds on Practical First Aid with more advanced skills required to recognise and manage less common, yet more severe medical and accident emergencies, with equipment available at the time. Topics covered can be tailored to suit a clients specific needs, and may include electrical injuries, chemical burns, chest and abdominal injuries, allergic reactions and heat stroke.

Advanced First Aid Courses

Pre Hospital Emergency Care – 3 day course

This is an advanced course for people who may need to support life for some time before help arrives. The course uses realistic scenarios to expose participants to a variety of specialist emergency medical equipment and emergency situations. The course is made up of four different modules:

  • Oxygen Therapy
  • Medical and Trauma Management
  • Defibrillation
  • Packaging Ready for Transport

The following modules can be conducted as stand-alone courses:

AED – Automated External Defibrillator

  • Assess and manage the scene of an emergency situation where early defibrillation is likely to be useful in the chain of survival
  • Assess and manage the necessary safety precautions to be taken when an AED is used
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the purpose and function of all of the AED controls to manage patients in an emergency situation.
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of enhanced cardiac care by appropriate AED electrode pad placement and the accurate management of AED prompt guidelines.

Scene and Patient Assessment Using Medical Oxygen and Associated Equipment

  • Assess and manage the scene of an emergency situation
  • Assess and manage a conscious and unconscious patient in an emergency medical and trauma situation
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of devices and/or techniques to manage patients in an emergency situation.
    • Airway patency – manual techniques, Artificial Airways (OPA)
    • BVM – Bag Valve Mask
    • Oxygen Masks
    • Suctioning
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge to monitor patients and provide information in an emergency situation

Patient Transportation and Extrication Devices

  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge to assess and manage the scene of an emergency situation without compromising the safety of the patient and the rescuers.
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge to assess and manage the necessary precautions to be taken when securing the patient to the extrication device ensuring minimum risk to patient and rescuer safety.
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the required techniques of patient transportation so that their condition is not compromised and their comfort and dignity are taken into account.
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge to ensure the condition of the patient is reassessed after moving, and further action initiated if required.
